We are safety specialists who provide a variety of services aimed at educating Ohio’s employers in safety management techniques. We also can assist you with specific safety needs.
Safety Program Advice
We can provide assistance with your written safety programs, violence in the workplace programs, OSHA recordkeeping, the 10-Step Business Plan and other programs. Program advice consists of helping you analyze your organization’s injury history; supporting you with program-design assistance; providing information on training, literature, websites, and other resources; and teaching you how to track program results. As a result of our consultation, you will be equipped to develop specific organizational safety policies, provide employee training, establish accountability for worker safety, implement the new safety program and track the results.
Hazard assessment and control assistance
You can benefit from our expertise in industrial safety, construction safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomics to improve hazard recognition, evaluation and control in your workplace. We will help you analyze your organization’s injury history and safety processes; help you design a method to assess your work operations; teach you to perform your own safety audits; provide access to sample programs, training and other resources; equip you to gain management commitment; and show you how to track results. Additionally, the BWC provides specific guidance, testing and evaluation in Ergonomics and Industrial Hygiene. If these services are needed please contact your Safety Representative and you will be put in contact with a specialist.
Safety culture/Behavior change processes
Safety culture assessments, leadership training, management systems evaluation and behavior-based safety systems can help your organization achieve better results through its safety process. We will provide in-depth injury-history analysis; report results and make recommendations on how to change the current safety culture; be available for answers and advice; facilitate leadership workshops and strategic planning; recommend the current best industry practices and models for cultural and behavioral change; and teach you how to track results. Your top organizational official should agree to manage a high-level action plan that includes evaluating and re-designing management systems, and urging the entire work force to participate in culture surveys. Leadership workshops are conducted for top managers.
Safety team/Committee evaluation and design
Safety teams encourage employee input and participation, and foster teamwork in addressing safety issues. BWC can assist you in establishing safety committees or teams, or in making existing teams more effective.
BWC Video Library
The library provides free informational services and safety videos on the topics of occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation, and rehabilitation. We provide the only such library in the state of Ohio, and one of the few in the nation. While most special libraries are not open to the public, our library serves employers, local and state government, legal and health care professionals, Ohio’s work force and the general public. The Division of Safety & Hygiene library has two locations to serve our users: the central library in the William Green Building in downtown Columbus and the resource center and video library at the Ohio Center for Occupational Safety and Health (OCOSH) in Pickerington, Ohio. Both locations are open 8 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. weekdays.

Group-Rating Safety Accountability Letter:
Dear Employer:
Each year Ohio employers have the opportunity to participate in BWC’s Group-Experience-Rating Program or Group-Retrospective-Rating Program. While these programs are not required, they do provide you with an opportunity to significantly reduce your workers’ compensation premiums, while increasing your awareness of safety and risk-management strategies.
Workplace safety is an important component of these programs. To succeed in accident prevention, we encourage you to use the many resources available to you. We believe a group-rating program is a partnership that includes you and your employees, your sponsoring organization or third-party administrator (TPA) and BWC. Each has specific roles and responsibilities, all designed to assist in preventing workplace accidents. This letter outlines the safety services expectations you should have as an employer enrolled in a group-rating program.
The employer will:
- Maintain a safe workplace;
- Attend safety training to enhance workplace safety;
- Implement BWC’s 10-Step Business Plan for Safety and use available safety services as needed;
- Attend the required two-hour training and provide proof of attendance to sponsor for claim(s)
- occurring within the last two years.
The certified primary and affiliated sponsoring organizations will:
- Communicate, educate and verify BWC’s 10-Step Business Plan for Safety to group members;
- Sponsor eight hours of safety training (this may be done at one time or may be provided incrementally as long as the total is at least eight hours);
- Provide information regarding safety resources to group members;
- Possibly assist an employer in achieving its safety needs;
- Manage employer fulfillment of the two-hour training requirement, where applicable;
- Publish this letter to group members.
The TPA may:
- Assist sponsoring organizations with fulfilling the group-rating safety requirements;
- Assist an employer with its safety needs;
- Work in conjunction with sponsors to develop safety training and deliver safety resources;
- Provide resources for claims handling.
BWC will:
- Monitor all group-rating safety activities to confirm requirements are met;
- Meet at least annually with sponsoring organizations to provide recommendations for fulfilling safety requirements;
- Provide safety training through Ohio’s Center for Occupational Safety & Health;
- Offer on-site safety consultation (hazard assessments, air and noise monitoring, ergonomics evaluation, training) by a BWC safety professional;
- Offer publications and videos for safety program support;
- Conduct employer visits to confirm the employer is meeting group-rating requirements, when appropriate.
The goal of this collaborative effort is to make sure all your safety needs are met. Using these resources will assist you in preventing accidents, reducing claims costs and achieving the highest discounts possible. Below you’ll find contact information for various resources.
