Scholarship applications are available at the high school guidance counselor’s offices after February. Students may attend any of the public and private schools in the area.

Once completed applications are submitted, the Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Committee reviews them and calls the top applicants back to the Chamber of Commerce for a formal interview before the committee. Decisions are based on scholastic achievements and financial need.

The Chamber of Commerce hosts a luncheon the Scholarship recipient’ honor every June – usually the 4th Wednesday of the month. The Scholarship recipients photo is then published in the Record Publishing/Falls News Press.

PURPOSE
To encourage higher education and professional development by means of Chamber Scholarships.

PROGRAMS
The Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program and the Night at the Races event are designated to financially support the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc.

The Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc. Board can also designate other events and programs deemed fit to this cause.
VISION
Our hope is that our Scholarships will encourage the recipients to excel as future business leaders and participate in the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce and give back to the community.

HISTORY
The Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce began in the fall of 1926 by a group of businessmen and property owners. At the Annual Meeting of the Falls Civic Association, a committee of 15 was appointed for the purpose of organizing a Chamber of Commerce. The first Meeting was held at the City Hall on November 24, 1926, followed by a membership campaign in January 1927.

In 2005 the Chamber of Commerce recognized a need for a non-profit foundation that would serve the purpose of raising money to put back in the community by way of scholarships.

Business Identity Factory
We’ve got some exciting new things happening that will allow us to help businesses grow. We’ve got a new video marketing service and some cool brand management tools. In preparing for the extended services we’ll be offering, I’m bringing on some interns. I want to train them from the ground up in website best practices. I need to get them as much real life experience in as short of a time as possible. So, I’ve decided to ask for your help to break in my interns. As the Web Development Partner of the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce, we normally offer a 5 page website for $600. For a limited time, I’m offering that same package for $300. I had the interns build a site detailing the offering at BreakInMyInterns.com If you know of anybody who either doesn’t have a website or has a horrible website, this would be a win-win situation: They get a great starter 5 page functional and expandable website and the interns get real life experience while being supervised and instructed in best practices. Feel free to point anybody to BreakInMyInterns.com. The sites will be built on the industry standard WordPress engine (73 million websites and counting). Order quickly, as we’ll only be having this group of interns build 12 sites.

CareWorks/ Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation
BWC’s Destination Excellence & Alternative Rating Program ChangesThe Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) has approved a number of changes to its alternative rating programs. These changes are designed to encourage meaningful behaviors by employers. Specific areas of focus are injury prevention, loss control and return-to-work efforts. Taken together, the significance of these changes is that the maximum allowable discount through traditional group experience rating has increased to 53% for the 2012 policy year from its prior 51% ceiling. BWC has branded these changes and new programs, Destination Excellence. Below is a summary of the changes made to various existing programs as well as new initiatives created to improve loss control and employer behavior.Taken together as a package, an employer could effectively reduce their workers’ compensation rates by 59%. For example, an employer with individual premium of $1,000 in a maximum 53% discount group rating program would see their premium reduced to $470. The Go Green and Lapse Free administrative discounts would reduce their premium even further to $461. If this same employer participated in their local Safety Council, the Advanced level of the Drug Free Safety Program and implemented industry-specific safety strategies, they could see their premium reduced to $407. For more information on how you can take advantage of these new programs, please call your CareWorks Consultants’ Program Manager toll-free, at (800) 837-3200.

Summa Western Reserve Hospital

Examines New Approaches to Treating Pain. The physicians of the Center for Pain Medicine at Summa Western Reserve Hospital continue to re-envision the treatment of chronic pain, and to promote awareness of and provide education about this vital initiative, the Center recently hosted a one-day conference for more than 100 healthcare professionals. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, nurses, pharmacists and students attended Chronic Pain Management: Improving the Patient’s Quality of Life, a special seminar led by Dr. Samer Narouze and aimed at elevating the use of less invasive, multidisciplinary pain treatment approaches. Summa Western Reserve is helping to pioneer this more comprehensive level of treatment to restore a patient’s quality of life at all points of care. Special emphasis was placed on approaching chronic pain as a ‘disease’ and not a ‘symptom’. Special guest presenter Orman Hall, Director of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services also addressed the audience about resolving Ohio’s opiate and prescription drug epidemic and establishing addiction prevention, treatment and recovery measures throughout the state. About Summa Western Reserve Hospital: Summa Western Reserve Hospital is the Northeast Ohio region’s first physician-owned, for-profit, full service hospital. With a commitment to patient satisfaction and improved healthcare delivery, Summa Western Reserve Hospital offers general and acute care services, including a 24/7 emergency department. Summa Western Reserve Hospital is also a teaching facility and sponsors graduate medical education teaching programs in osteopathic medicine. The hospital is a majority physician-owned joint venture between Western Reserve Hospital Partners (which represents a collaboration of more than 200 physicians, including primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists) and Summa Health System. http://www.westernreservehospital.org/

Akron Institute of Herzing University

On March 5, 6 & 7 Rodney Sphon, Business student, and Campus President Dave LaRue were in Washington to participate in Hill Day. Hill Day is an annual event sponsored by the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU). It is an opportunity for students, employers, alumni and staff of member schools from across the country, to converge on Washington and meet with Senators and Representatives from all fifty states. During our visit Rodney and I, along with a student from the Toledo campus, two students from the Minneapolis campus, and one each from New Orleans and Omaha, walked Capitol Hill and met with our own local legislators, or their legislative aides. Rodney and I started our day by visiting Senator Herb Kohl, Wisconsin, along with University President Renee Herzing, Toledo student Shamika Jenkins and Omaha graduate, Melissa Langford. Next Rodney and I visited with Ohio Senator Rob Portman. While waiting to meet and speak with the Senator, President LaRue was able to meet and talk with Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, Akron City Council member Marco Sommerville, and Summit County Executive Russ Pry, who were in Washington for an economic development conference. After lunch in the Longworth House Office Building cafeteria, visits were made to Representatives Tim Ryan, Betty Sutton and Bill Johnson’s offices. The purpose of the visits was to emphasize the importance of career focused education as part of the higher education community. We asked each office to visit our campuses and to look at legislation that is presented in a fair and equal treatment to all forms of higher education. We asked that only one sector not be singled out for consideration of programs available to students. We asked that all students be given the opportunity to participate in their higher education at the campus of their choice. This was the fourth visit of representatives from the Akron campus to visit Capitol Hill and speak with the offices of our legislators. www.herzing.edu/akron

Ohio Chamber of Commerce

Moody’s Revises Ohio’s Outlook – Positive Sign for Ohio’s Future. There is very positive economic news to share with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce members — Moody’s Investors Service positively revised Ohio’s outlook from negative to stable and affirms a credit rating of Aa1 on General Obligation Bonds (GO). According to Moody’s the improved rating “reflects a record of strong financial management proven through generally proactive responses to budget shortfall, recent revenue growth and improved financial position, and the expectation that excess revenues will continue to be used to rebuild reserves in the near term.” Moody’s also recognized our diverse centers of commerce, by stating “the stable outlook also reflects the expectation that Ohio’s economy and demographics will continue to stabilize given recent growth in manufacturing, health care and energy exploration.” Ohio has a strong reputation for overcoming obstacles presented during economic downturns and today’s announcement reaffirms that. We all know that there are still challenges ahead, but I hope that you will help me spread this positive news. By working together and investing in our state we will make Ohio great – again! The full release by Moody’s can be found on their website. website.
